Often, women who have had a previous Cesarean birth would like to give birth vaginally. Because of limited options in the hospital setting, many women are coming to homebirth in order to have the chance for a VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Cesarean). During an initial interview, we will discuss the risks and benefits of VBAC, options in Maine for VBAC attended births, and whether you are a good candidate for a home VBAC. We attend many successful VBAC births each year!

Ideally, couples will prepare for a conscious conception by optimizing their own health. We are happy to meet with women or couples who are considering becoming pregnant. During a pre-conception visit we will likely discuss any current health issues, folic acid supplementation, nutritional recommendations for optimizing fertility and conception, and answer any questions particular to you as a couple. These visits sometimes double as an interview, where there is opportunity to ask about homebirth midwifery care, and our philosophy of pregnancy and birth. It is a growing trend for couples to investigate prenatal care and birth options pre-conception.

The midwives at Morningstar are comfortable teaching fertility awareness to couples who wish to conceive, as well as those who wish to delay conception. As many women have growing concerns about the safety of other birth control methods, there is an increase in those who wish to take charge of their fertility by understanding a woman's monthly cycles. We are happy to be part of this educational process. Many families combine fertility awareness with another form of birth control during the times when conception is possible. We are happy to discuss all available forms of birth control, and to make referral for those when appropriate.

"Babies need mothers and mothers need others." The midwives at Morningstar love to help families connect. There is a vibrant homebirth community which offers support around issues like breastfeeding, attachment parenting, and birth and postpartum support. At our office we have a babies group which meets every 1st and 3rd Monday of the month. This is an opportunity for families to make connections, learn what is going on in their communities, and get support from a group of people typically making the same sorts of parenting choices. When we are growing young families, we greatly benefit from the love and support of others doing the same.

The midwives at Morningstar are very comfortable with siblings at births. During your prenatal course, we take time to get to know your other child(ren). We recommend getting them familiarized with what to expect by reading books or watching videos about birth. We suggest that you invite a "birth buddy" to your labor who is there just for your child(ren)'s support and can keep them company as they come and go from the birth. Most siblings are thrilled to have been a part of their baby's arrival into the world.

Morningstar Midwifery proudly boasts 100% breastfeeding success amongst our families. We gladly offer breastfeeding support to clients and other new mothers in the community. The number one reason for failure to breastfeed is lack of good support. Please don't hesitate to call. We also offer holistic care for common breastfeeding issues like cracked nipples, plugged ducts and mastitis. We also can make appropriate referrals to the local La Leche League group, a private practice lactation consultant or the simple support our our new mother's group at Morningstar's Maternal Wellness Center.

Morningstar Midwifery owns four water tubs with heaters and pumps that are available for rental. The tubs are five feet across and hold 175 gallons of water. Rentals include a disposable liner so that the tub is sanitary for your use. Birth tubs are typically delivered 3-4 weeks prior to your expected due date and are easy to set up when labor begins.

Morningstar Midwifery is happy to offer free initial consultations either during your pregnancy or pre-conception. Although homebirth has gained a lot of media attention in recent years, it is still somewhat of an unknown in our culture. We are glad to meet with couples to discuss homebirth and its safety, the CPM credential, and the particular questions and concerns you may have. All appointments are one hour and fifteen minutes long so that there is ample time to get all of your questions answered as well as getting a sense of us personally and our philosophy of care. Homebirth is an intimate choice. We want families to feel both confident in our abilities and completely comfortable with us when they decide to include us as in their birth plans.
