“…experiences have clearly shown that an approach which ‘de-medicalizes’ birth, restores dignity and humanity to the process of childbirth, and returns control to the mother is also the safest approach.”
– Michel Odent, MD

The two Certified Professional Midwives at Morningstar work together to provide complete prenatal, birth, and postpartum care to families in the midcoast area and beyond. Once a family has interviewed with the midwives and chosen to work with Morningstar, care begins early in pregnancy and follows a routine course with visits initially every four weeks and then becoming more frequent as the pregnancy progresses. These prenatal visits typically last one and a quarter hours each and are full of information sharing, relationship building and all the routines for assessing wellness of mother and baby. These visits can take place at either of our offices, in Belfast or Rockland, or a combination thereof. Any labwork that needs to be done can be provided during one of your regularly scheduled visits. Any ultrasounds that are desired can be ordered at another location.

Typically, Donna and Ellie attend births as a team, and often have a midwifery student in tow (you can read about our current apprentice Lesli under "who we are"). Occasionally, if either of the midwives needs to travel and is going to be out of town around a client’s due date, an alternate midwife will be on call as an assistant during that time. We are on call for families throughout their pregnancies and are always available for questions or concerns.

Postpartum care is provided both in the home and office settings, with a final visit at six weeks postpartum. Typically families have a pediatric visit with their newborn during this time in order to establish care. However, all of the post birth newborn routines are offered by the midwives, and there is no need to see another provider in the immediate postpartum. We also do all the paperwork to apply for a birth certificate and social security number for our home born babies.
